One day we received two devices that were left in a microwave by a customer as an anti theft measure. The sticks were left separate to the company laptop to ensure that even if the laptop was stolen the data on the sticks wouldn’t be taken with it.

Not a bad idea as a security precaution BUT

Disaster struck, when the customers partner came down in the morning and turned on the microwave to heat up the morning bottle for the baby. The very last thing you would expect is to have electronic equipment in an oven and subsequently the drives got “cooked ” as well

One of the devices was a Kingston Data Traveler device with a plastic outer casing and despite melting of the plastic around the internal board and the chip appearing to sustain a slight level of damage the device was recovered.
